Will both spouses need to hire their own lawyers in addition to their mediator?
Amy Zylman Shimalla’s Answer:
It is recommended that both parties have their own lawyers in addition to the mediator. The mediator will guide the parties through the process to help them reach a resolution of all issues. The mediator can educate the parties about the relevant law, but he or she cannot give either party express legal advice. The parties will also need lawyers to finalize the divorce as the mediator cannot represent either of them in finalizing the divorce once agreement is reached.
